Intricate Emotions by J. Ramirez5/28/2023 The development of the subsequent memory paradigm provided evidence about the functional role of encoding-related neural activity by using it to predict accurate memory retrieval, thereby allowing researchers to directly link brain activity and memory performance ( 22, 23). As such, encoding-related activity in these and other regions could have been related to any number of processes, which may or may not have predicted successful memory formation. At that time, theories had implicated the hippocampus and inferior frontal gyrus in memory formation, but available neuroimaging methods offered no direct evidence for this claim. In a broad sense, the knowledge gap concerning the sources of interpersonal understanding is similar to the situation of memory research 10 years ago.
